For what its worth I proposed, and wrote code for, something to this a few years ago: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-sysvinit-devel/2008-July/002749.html That small thread went on to discuss the virtues of offering a 0/N patch series email which was not so helpful, and so I decided to forget about it ever since. If you'd like to revive or discuss that patch I'm all ears.
