Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.76-4
Severity: important
/etc/init.d/checkfs,root}.sh default to feed -a to fsck. This causes
automagic repairing of files, which can be harmful in some cases,
causing data loss (like it's happening lately to me). If $FSCKFIX is
set to 'y', then it is as well dangerous.
The most important problem is you don't know the files are missing
until you need them, as there is no report (or I don't know where to
find it).
I'd suggest to:
a) add a second parameter, $FSCKREPAIR, which would run fsck with
"-a", otherwise let the fsck be as interactive as possible.
b) filter output of fsck trough tee to a log file (eg:
/var/log/boot). This is not possible for the root partition,
though it could be stored in memory and then dumped on remount-rw
time.
Thanks for your attention,
Your happy Debian user :)

This bug is being closed as part of a cleanup of the old bug
reports in the sysvinit package, in an attempt to make it easier
to address the bug reports which actually are fixable. Some
reasons:
- Not a bug and/or it's a patch which will not be applied
- It will not be fixed, ever for various reasons
- Problem is not fixable in sysvinit or not our responsibility
- A better solution has become available in the interim
- No activity or submitter response in over a decade or more
