Partial upgrades like this are difficult to support, and it is not
entirely surprising if they are not fully working. Which packages have
you upgraded to versions from buster?
I would recommend running one of these options:
* Debian 9 'stretch'
* Debian 9 'stretch' with selected packages upgraded from stretch-backports
* Debian testing/unstable (fully upgraded)
