* What led up to the situation?
I'm trying to add a VPN connection in nm-applet from a saved config
Do you mean nm-connection-editor?
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
In nm-applet, I tried creating VPN connection from file or manually. VPN tab is still
empty. I cannot enter my user/pass thus VPN connection is considered incomplete =>
"save" button greyed-out
In CLI I tried to run "openvpn --config /tmp/openvpn_client.ovpn" and "nmcli connection import
type openvpn file /tmp/openvpn_client.ovpn". VPN connection gets created but "VPN" tab in nm-applet
still empty => I cannot enter credentials => VPN entry does not work.
I tried to restart NM "service"/daemon. With no luck.
I tried to include the user/pass in the "openvpn_client.ovpn" file through
"auth-user-pass <filename>" directive, but does not work either.
I tried to install the latest (stable/unstable) version of
network-manager-openvpn package but it requires to upgrade other packages
(libnm0) and I didn't want to break my system.
* What was the outcome of this action?
See above the various results for various commands
* What outcome did you expect instead?
I need the VPN tab of nm-applet to show the various textboxes for its
configuration, included username & passaword, so that I can enter & save them!

If you run a nm-connection-editor from a terminal, what is the output on stdout/stderr if you try to create a connection?

You have packages installed that hint towards Debian Mint. Is that some kind of FrankenDebian where you have other repositories enabled?
