if dbus is upgraded (i.e. the service is restarted), the nm-applet freaks
out and stops working. to reproduce:

pkill nm-applet, and start it from a terminal (so you can see the output
and debug it,e tc).

/etc/init.d/dbus stop

(wait a second or two)

/etc/init.d/dbus start

nm-applet will produce the following error message:

** Message: NM disappeared
** Message: <info> disconnected by the system bus.

** (nm-applet:27033): WARNING **: <WARN>  bus_init(): Could not get the system
bus. Make sure the message bus daemon is running! Message: Failed to connect
to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: Connection refused

similarly, if you do a dbus restart, and it's fast enough(?), you'll
get a different error message:

** Message: NM disappeared
** Message: <info> disconnected by the system bus.

** Message: <info> reconnected to the system bus.

but in both cases, the symptom is the same: the network connection
has been torn down and the applet is no where to be seen (though it is
still running). To fix it I have to pkill nm-applet and run it again
from a terminal, or log out and log back in.
