I am also seeing this problem running LXDE on an up to date testing install and booting using sysvinit-core and systemd-shim. It appears to be a general authentication problem as mounting removable media also gives permission errors and trying to run gparted fails. If I boot with systemd (init=/bin/systemd on kernel command-line) then everything works as expected.
