As you said, upstream is aware of the problem so I don't think it'll be fixed anytime soon, you'll have to wait. I don't think there's a proper solution than fixing xfdesktop code, and this won't happen. If by chance you know C and can hack xfdesktop, maybe upstream will accept patches for this issue, but nobody knows...
