It looks like thunar-volman must have installed also package "hal".
Otherwise new inserted usb disk is not displayed. To be in a group
plugdev does not solves this problem. However it is also necessary.
After installation of "hal" you must add user also to group "haldaemon".
Otherwise are devices mounted only with root rights

I do not know. I have installed fresh installation of debian squeeze
with Xserver and Xfce4 and nothing has depended on HAL package.

Actual update of HAL in squeeze depends newly also on consolekit and
some other new packages. After update I have removed the user from
Plugdev group and now (with consolekit) is this user able to
automaticaly mount and use USB storage devices in Thunar too (also
without membership in plugdev group). And to be in haldaemon is also not
necessary.
... but anyway - it is a pain with the groups. What they means, what
purpose they have. There should be some internal database where would
be every group described and every new software that needs this group
would make some notes there.
