The bug is reproducible without any files
under .local/share/applications. But here's the defaults.list I have
right now, after telling Thunar to open a Word document with Open
Office, a text file with Geany, and a Vorbis file with Audacious:
[Default Applications]
text/plain=geany.desktop;openoffice.org-writer.desktop
video/x-theora+ogg=audacious2.2.desktop
