Dear Maintainer, Thanks for your help. I restarted xfwm4 from bash, and all is well.
I'm not sure how the window manager got turned off. I checked .xsession-errors and found no mention of xfwm4. I grep'ed all of my log files in /var/log and the only hits I found were in popularity contest and in the dpkg logs which documented the upgrade from version 4.8.2-1 to 4.8.3-1. The upgrade happened 2 weeks before I had any problems so I don't think this is the answer. If it happens again, I look for any assoications and let you know.
