I found a solution: Log into GNOME3, set the default
applications there (system info -> default applications). Log
into XFCE4 again, and it works.

This means, however, that XFCE is the culprit :~) It's default
application selection should just work as GNOMEs does. Maybe
one should take a look into their source code.
