I can't believe that I forgot/overlooked the right click configuration. Indeed that enables the modification. But wait, surely it is still a bug that xfce4-sensors displays the "show" radio button (which appears to be active) but which appears to do nothing when directly invoked, rather than via a panel right click? Being presented with a apparently active radio button for the configuration led me to forget the right click option, I suspect. Perhaps it should be "greyed out" when run directly. Maybe a comment for upstream?
