Unselecting by clicking on "use the system color theme" in gnome-terminal running in XFCE4 was the trick. foreground and background had exactly the same color. So I always saw a white cow on white background. --> no cursor visible. Switched to gnome3 and had a look at the color-theme of gnome-terminal, it was black on white.
