Would you please consider adding a hook script to Xsession.d in the style of /etc/X11/Xsession.d/55gnome-session_gnomerc from gnome-session? This adds /usr/share/gnome to XDG_DATA_DIRS which, along with this symlink: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Apr 10 13:16 /usr/share/gnome/applications/defaults.list -> /etc/gnome/defaults.list allows for sysadmins to perform system-wide configuration of default applications without having to edit files in /usr/share/applications or /usr/local/share/applications (as these are the only paths which seem to be in XDG_DATA_DIRS in XFCE at the moment. Something similar involving /usr/share/xfce4 would be very helpful. I'm willing to prepare and test a patch if you agree with the general idea.
