As of the last update of stretch, which I did just a few minutes ago, this problem has been solved. I suspect that the problem was gtk-related, as the problems I was having with web (i.e. epiphany-browser) have been fixed too. However, since I am only subscribed to this bug report, and did not open it myself, I will leave closure to the OP or to the package maintainer.
