I have the same problem, it also occurs with I click the new login button on xscreensaver and i then have to either hard reboot or restart lightdm from an ssh session. As I am running two monitors I also noticed one of them which is using displayport turns off and says waiting for signal while the other just shows the flashing cursor, interestingly locking the screen through the menu doesnt cause, its when running the command or using xscreensaver new login it occurs. Tried removing xscreensaver and then it occurs when locking screen through menu.
