what do you mean by "do the port properly so it can go into the
mainline distributions?"
updating the python port is done in less than a day, perl the same
thing, it even
comes with the mkfiles, you might have to tweak them a bit, but just that

modern, the one we have was the lastest at the time I did the port and
the port took 10 minutes
