answer: you don't want application developers doing that.

it assumes a 2D block. what happens when we change that?
it assumes app devs know where to position things: they don't.

:)

on the app side always set metadata, enough so the rendering app can decide 
how to sort it out.

on the visualization side, do the arranging.
