As a side note: Many use cases of virtual desktops and activities come down to this as well, as do 
Yakuake and other implementations of the enduringly popular drop-down terminal pattern. It's 
clearly a thing. And I find it really odd how the repeated "let's redesign the tray" 
plans always ignore how and why people actually use the thing (because investigating this points to 
user needs, and then you can ponder how to best meet them - instead of developing theoretical 
"this would be cleaner" models).
Different users want different things and we want to make this as non-destructive as possible, however, we don't think that the current state of things is acceptable. I can assure you that we did not sit together and went "hurr durr, let's reorganise the system tray for fun" ;)
