Yeah, I looked into that - way too complicated. I'd go with the principle of least surprise here. If there's only a small round button and the rest of that horizontal area is visible "below" it, then the user will likely expect to be able to interact with the button by "touching" the button and with what's shown "below" it, otherwise.
