The issue was with lib3ds and not Gazebo. We resolved it by compiling lib3ds with gcc32 instead of gcc4, and then recompiling gazebo-0.5.2 with gcc4.
For details check the lib3ds mailing list: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9341318&forum_id=5465 The lib3ds bug caused all floating point values in the .3ds file to be read in as extremely small numbers, so the skin was just too small to be seen. Gazebo was actually loading and attempting to display the skin, which is why it ran slower and hid the object geometry.
