It sounds like the configure script is having problems detecting your system. Maybe your machine sets the ARCH environment variable to a weird value. Try this before running configure: unset ARCH (Works for bash). Also check what /bin/arch or "uname -m" returns: I get i686 or x86_64. > How can i get a package for a PC i386 or i486? The gazebo source code works in almost any Linux machine, including 386s, and 486s (but it would be very slow).
