Hi guys,

I need some advice about the suitability of using Gazebo
(and Stage).

I'm currently involved in a project of distributed
robotics which is a follow-up of a previous project, the
Swarmbot project (http:// www.swarm-bots.org/). We are
just starting with the new project and we are now
considering the issue of choosing the simulation platform.
We will have flying, rolling and climbing robots, which we
will design and manufacture from scratch. They will live
in a physical 3D world and will have some tight physical
interaction (other than, of course, exchanging messages).

Some of the partners already have from previous projects
draft simulators for the flying and rolling robots (using
ODE and OpenGL stuff). Therefore, the majority of people
in the project tend to like the idea to develop from
scratch a common simulation framework that would take care
of the physical environment and interactions as well as of
the graphical visualization. In this way they think it
will be easier to re-use the code they already have at
hand.

On the other hand, I would like to use Gazebo, since it is
a ready-to-use simulation platform, it looks quite well
done, and it comes with all the necessary tools. I also
"suspect" that it should not be too complex to migrate the
old code into Gazebo. However, from the documentation,
which is not that great, I have to say, it's a bit hard to
understand if Gazebo is really suitable to simulate
complex ehterogenous environments/robots and their
interactions. Can I have you advice wrt this issue? What
about computational performance? Moreover, it would be
nice to have the code of one of the nice video examples
available on the web site, in order to get a better
understanding of how difficult is in practice writing code
using Gazebo and what would be the cost of migrate old
code based on ODE/OpenGL.

Thanks a lot!

Gianni
