I have the same problem with ubuntu feisty and an Ati 9100 video card.
Driver are correctly installed, glxinfo return direct rendering on and
glxgears work very well but when I run wxgazebo I get this error:
X Error of failed request: GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest
Major opcode of failed request: 157 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (X_GLXVendorPrivate)
Serial number of failed request: 21
Current serial number in output stream: 22
server died
stopping server
