Bootp is still BIOS dependent....... (something has to load the OS code, and
that is a BIOS). It just isn't dependent the same way that an ATA-66 drive
is.
As for bootp not talking to a drive--no, you are right it doesn't _exactly_
talk to a drive, although the data has to be stored on some sort of mass
storage device anyway. In any case even if the OS is on a huge ROM
somewhere, it can still be classified as a "drive" in a very loose sense
.(So far as the system BIOS is concerned under x86, it is always seen as a
file or stream of some sort....no matter what "it" is.) ;^)
