Theres something vmware uses to do this without the overhead of another X i think its dga and what it does is you hit alt+f8 and X handles it still but its like your in the os your booting all the keys work cept ctrl+alt+fx and stuff like that its the fullscreen mode however for method 1 that you suggested try ratpoisen its a window manager like screen and it auto full screens things (even xmms) and it has no window decorations. search freshmeat.net for ratpoisen.
