They don't have to be. Linux will work with the BIOS of your
choice. If someone invents an open source BIOS then linux will work
with it. 

It's not the kernel's fault (or lilo's fault) that there aren't any
(AFAIK) that are free and they don't depend on a particular non-free
bios to work, so they are free.

How about this one: Computers are not free and linux depends on
a computer therefore linux is not free so everything should be in
contrib.
