right now your best bet is vmware. not sure what your planning on running,
but on a classic athlon 600 with 256 megs of ram, i can run win9x and linux
at what i consider acceptable speed levels. (your not running fully native
on the processor, so you arent gonna be real speedy)
another option is running under bochs, but i cant help you there as ive
never tried out bochs
