Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about compiling Plex86.
I finally managed to locate the right download off ftp://ftp.plex86.org
(plex86-2001-0616.tar.gz) and compiled it. After the reading the
documentation (for once :)), I found out that one of the options I had
specified for the configure script was invalid anyway:

"--enable-cosimulation
Enable support for cosimulating with another
simulation/emulation/virtualization package. (not currently supported)"

Not currently supported. I should have read the manuals first. :)

Anyway, I finally got Plex86 going and it is indeed faster than Bochs --
according to the Bogomips counter. In Bochs, Linux gets 0.85 Bogomips,
while in Plex, it gets 1.92. Congratulations! That's more than twice as fast
as Plex but...

It's still unbearable :(.

I know that Plex86 is still under development but even DOS lags and Plex
seems to have horrible CGA/EGA/VGA/SVGA graphics support.
Performance is so bad that my hopes of playing AoE in Linux have been
dashed.

Is this going to change? Or has it already because the CVS has been updated?

Or is it my configuration? I am using a Pentium II processor and was at least
expecting 33 Mhz 386 speeds and hoping for Pentium 90 Mhz speeds.

Does anyone know how to speed Plex up? I'm sure I've done something wrong.

Thanks in advance,
George
