I got it figured out last night...
Something strange happened somewhere... perhapse the modutils 2.4.13
Makefile or configure script saw no kernel headers for 2.4.x and
insalled kernel headers for linux-2.4.13. It turns out that kernel
header .deb packages were just putting kernel headers in /usr/src/ and
not modifying /usr/include/linux. I guess I should have installed
modutils after compiling the new kernel. I also should have realized
that the search path would hit /usr/include/ before hitting
/usr/src/linux/include/.
Has anyone run into any patches to map all of the things in /dev
into devfs before devfs inserts itself into the VFS to replace /dev ?
