Are you sure you have the same kernel version and kernel sources version?
What do you have in /var/log/Xorg.0.log when X doesn't start?

Regarding the PLF packages "overriding" stock packages, I do share your 
concern. 
Currently I can think of three ways of going forward:

a) Continue as before. Unfortunately, if the user has inconsistent 
kernel&kernel-source versions this will break the driver as module cannot be 
built (this is actually a general problem with the Mandriva's kernel-source 
packages).
b) Drop packages from PLF (I could maintain them separately).
c) Rename the packages to something like dkms-nvidia-plf etc. to prevent --auto-
select from upgrading stock packages to plf ones.

What do you (and "you" means everybody reading this) think?
