I came into a similar problem yesterday with the zlib library and, besides what Laurence said, you may want to take a look at this:

resuming, starting 11.04 (Natty) Ubuntu introduced a new feature called multiarch and some shared libraries are installed in architecture specific directories: Python 2.6 and earlier won't find them.
