Now that Rafael has stepped down from working on the plplot I am keen
that we don't lose the debian / ubuntu packages for plplot. This has
been a big step forward in terms of increasing our user base and
making plplot easily available.

There are two related issues here.

1) The current rules for building debian packages uses the autotools
build system which is now being depreciated. In fact, when I tried today
I couldn't get the packages to build at all. This may be error on my
part though, I will investigate further. Unfortunately it is not
entirely straight forward to do it from the CVS and there are no
instructions. We need to port this to use the cmake build system - my
intention is also to work on this. Hopefully this will help us with 2)

2) Find a new debian developer to maintain the packages. If we can do
some of the support work within the plplot project this should be a
relatively simple job. Both Alan and I are debian / ubuntu users but
neither of us are developers. Ideally the maintainer should be someone
using plplot / already associated with the project.

Are there any debian / ubuntu developers out there who would be willing
to take over maintainance of the debian packages, with our help?

Andrew
