For now with those sort of speeds, it sounds like this should be a driver
option.  But I sure don't understand why cairo takes so long to render
clipped text, and I wonder if a question about that to the appropriate
cairo-related list might give you a faster alternative for clipping text
or they might find the efficiency bottleneck in their code for this case.
