One of the things I want to do soon in preparation for the next development release is remove all the old autotools cruft.
It's been quite a while since I have referred to our autotools efforts to compare with what we are doing now with our CMake-based build system, but just in case we need access to that old configuration information, it is easily accessible from http://plplot.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/plplot/tags/v5_8_0/ or previous tags. Thus, I see no need to keep autotools-related material in the trunk version of our svn repository. Therefore, I propose to do a massive delete from svn trunk of all our Makefile.am files, the *.in files we are not using from CMake, the cf directory, configure.ac, and all other files that are autotools-specific. I also plan to remove autotools references from our documentation, the INSTALL file, our release scripts, etc. Does any developer here have strong objections to this plan? If I don't hear any such objections, I plan to go ahead with the big svn delete this weekend, and I am looking forward to a leaner svn trunk version that is much easier to understand as a result.
