My recent commit for revision 8299 had the following commit message: Change subdirectory name from test to plplot_test to solve name clash with the CMake test target name. After this change "make test" works for the first time.
Since some of those lurking on this list do not subscribe to plplot-cvs, I thought I should bring this change to your full attention so the renaming of the test directory to plplot_test (which will happen automatically when you execute "svn update") does not take you by surprise.
