Perhaps:
EXE_DIR=`dirname $0`
EXAMPLES_DIR=${EXAMPLES_DIR:=$EXE_DIR}
SRC_EXAMPLES_DIR=${SRC_EXAMPLES_DIR:=$EXE_DIR}
would work?
