I think locations where our software is installed should have good defaults
(hopefully), but also I think user customization of those locations should
be allowed as well.  So sure, go for it (after testing my idea of caching
the variable actually works like you want it to).

N.B. cache variables are tricky.  So in general I prefer not to put variables
in the cache unless some user customization is desired (as in the present
case).
