Before I told it where they are, it would turn off WITH_FREETYPE and using the xcairo device crashed. After telling cmake where the freetype fonts are, it didn't turn off WITH_FREETYPE and after rebuilding (make clean install) the xcairo device worked. I even went back and turned off WITH_FREETYPE and after rebuilding (make clean install) the xcairo device once again crashed. Needless to say, I did yet another cmake/ rebuild using WITH_FREETYPE=ON and xcairo is working for me again. I am in the process of updating my MacPorts installation, but after that finishes I will (try to) recreate the above steps and capture all the output you've requested.
