FWIW, I have since learned that users of git can run "git config  
format.attach true" to modify an individual repository's .git/config  
so that "git format-patch" and "git send-email" in that repository  
will default to creating patches as attachments.

I'm still looking for the option to compress attachments.  I get the  
feeling that compressing attachments goes somewhat against the grain  
of the git developers' philosophy of wanting to be able to review the  
patches in their email/text viewer before applying them with "git  
am" (apply mailbox).  They may also want to avoid any potentially  
unpleasant combinations of libZ and gIT! :-)
