I noticed that underscores and backslashes in plmtex text appear as  
centered dots with the xwin driver, but as underscores and  
backslashes with the xcairo driver.  I also notice that these two  
characters appear as centered dots with both drivers in example 6,  
which uses plploin...

The caret/circumflex character appears as a degree symbol, which is  
also problematic (IMHO), but at least it's consistent with PGPLOT...

I looked into where/how to rectify this, but I don't (yet) understand  
PLplot's text encoding and font handling well enough to make progress  
myself.  Can anybody help me out here?
