I have just (revision 11126) bumped the minimum version of CMake to 2.6.4 for all platforms. This gives us "if(TARGET..." capability on all platforms and CMake-2.6.4 or later versions of CMake should be readily available everywhere.
I plan to bump our minimum version to 2.8.2 as soon as the major Linux distros carry it (probably within a few months). This should significantly simplify our language support.
