While I fully agree that some manner of grouping may be ideal, the
current numeric codes are (IIRC) based on the Hershey font symbol
codes.

One possiblity would be to add a series of pre-defined constants to
the PLplot API which reference specific symbols.  I added something
like this for a few symbols in the OCaml API.  Another option may be
to allow users to provide a specific Unicode symbol to draw by name.
