The DocBook backend tools we use to generate the various forms of our documentation were chosen almost a decade ago by Rafael (since retired from PLplot) and some of them are quite dated. For example, the last official release of openjade was done in 2003 (!). To address this general issue I have decided to start a review of the DocBook backend tools we use.
The current status is I have collected (revision 11337) a list of the backend tools we currently use in doc/docbook/README.developers, and I hope to get advice on newer/better replacements (if any) for those tools through a post I am about to send to the DocBook App mailing list. If I obtain some useful information as a result of that post, I will share it here. My hope is that if we improve the backend tools, then some of the nagging documentation bugs (such as the one I found today which demonstrated UTF-8 was currently not accepted by openjade in our DocBook source) would be eliminated.
