I have just completed a first set of tests with the 
cairo-pango
package - it works fine!

That is:
- I used GTK+ 2.2, as advised on the Wiki
- The combination MinGW+gcc works fine (did not test the 
Fortran
   examples yet)
- The combination MSVC+NMake Makefiles+Intel Fortran works 
fine

All you need to do is set a few environment variables 
(most notably
the path). I will update the Wiki pages sometime tomorrow, 
but
this was a really encouraging experience.
