This thread has long evolved from its origins concerning the const
modifier so I have changed the subject line to something more
appropriate.

I repeat that sentiment.  My next planned step is to take a look at
the pllegend D issues to see if I can make any progress there
using my tried and true "programming by analogy" trick when I
know little about a language.
