Alan,

This is good news. A lot of this has been tested by the Debian packages, 
but not with the current svn and not with quite the same tools (e.g. your 
use of gcj).

AGG is available in Debian in the libagg-dev package. It's is only 
available as a static library. I don't know why! I have used this in 
the past.

I'm happy to help with the D2 move, but I have practically no experience 
with the D language, so I would defer to Werner's advice on this.

Glad to hear that.

This is also good to know. On some architectures there are issues with
some examples. You can see all the debian build logs (including make test
results) for the debian 5.9.9 packages at 
http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/plplot.html
(Link on the RHS to buildd logs)

The QA also has other tests / warnings, some about Debian packaging issues, 
others possible more general. If anyone has access to non-intel based 
machines with Debian on then further investigation would be useful.

Also good to know! I did iron out one or two issues when doing the
last Debian packages.

That would be great. As always more extensive testing on a variety of
platforms is essential. Another great way for users to get involved.
