Just one more thing before I go to sleep.  I just did a quick search
for -rpath and Cygwin, and it appears it does work in simple cases. 
So there is still good hope the current approach will work.  But if
it turns out not, then I can quickly change the build system
logic to implement the dll workaround for cygwin.
