To resurrect this 3-month-old thread, today for the first time I
introduced UTF-8 symbols into api.xml. As expected from previous tests
which included an extensive UTF-8 table in advanced.xml, those results
rendered properly for the html, pdf, and info backends for our DocBook
documentation. However, this was the first opportunity I had to test
what happens with UTF-8 symbols with the man backend since that
backend ignores all our DocBook files except for api.xml. I horsed
around with nroff -man options, but could never get a good rendering
of those symbols so I was a bit discouraged by that initial result,
but finally I tried the actual man viewer and not "nroff -man" (by
copying the relevant man pages to a temporary directory man/man3 and
using "man -M./man <command name>"), and that method of testing our
man pages rendered the UTF-8 symbols without issues.

So I am happy with our generated man pages which include UTF-8
symbols, and (as of revision 12959) I have updated
doc/docbook/README.developers accordingly.
