I understand your position.  :-)

In fact, I am doing the same thing now (hacking rather than acquiring
deep understanding) that you did back then, and I am pretty sure all
is well with my recent hack due to the comprehensive rendering test
with gv that I did.

Thus, I think the only surviving issue from this current thread is the
-geometry offset/boundary box one that I recently described under
a new subject line to Andrew.
